The Benefit of Benefits

We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously...(Romans 12:6-8 NIV)

Benefits and fundraisers are planned and organized to help those in great need, be it for medical expenses, housing, loss of income, it doesn't matter, helping those in need is what we do best. The exercise of giving what we can and a little more, working in fellowship with others seems to gather us as one, in spirit and love for our friends.

Mark 12:41-44.....The Widow’s Offering

41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.
43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

It doesn't matter what our resources are, gifts from the bottom of our hearts and purses, mean so much. If money isn't available, give of your labor for it also is a gift. These organized benefits give opportunity to all who come willingly to help their friend.
Acts 4:34–37 (ESV)
34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold35 and laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. 36 Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles

Even if they do not possess the resources to help, they earnestly pray for those needs to be met.

  • "And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective."
    James 5:15-16 (NIV)
